Clomiphene citrate (Clomid) is a synthetic non-steroidal drug that is very similar in structure to estrogen. It is widely used as an ovulatory stimulant. Because of its similarity to estrogen, it can bind to the estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus. This blocks the hypothalamus from sensing "real" estrogen and the hypothalamus in turn acts by stimulating the pituitary to release more Gonadotropins like FSH and LH. The FSH and LH stimulate the ovaries/testes to produce more estrogen/testosterone. This property of clomiphene has been widely used to treat women with ovarian failure and induce ovulation. However, long term use of this drug may not be safe because of the increase risk of ovarian cancer.
Clomiphene citrate is a drug to induce ovulation in women with infertility. Clomiphene citrate or clomiphene (active ingredient), is a structural analog of estrogen, and inhibits their action by binding preferentially to the receiver of hypothalamic neurons normally dedicated to receiving estrogen hormones: clomiphene is a competitive inhibitor of estrogen in hypothalamic receptor. Clomiphene can be used either alone or in combination with metformin to induce ovulation in infertile women with inadequate follicle, corresponding to a defect in the production of estradiol by the ovarian cortex. Clomiphene citrate is effective and can be taken orally in tablet form.Reviews
